Screening of Maria Bakalo's performance "Again and Again and How It Ends"

Author and performer Maria Bakalo reflects on the consequences of nuclear disarmament in Ukraine, on the responsibility of the country and society to each other. Along with issues of security policies and the global threat of the destruction of humanity, the artist poses simple things: caring for loved ones, putting together puzzles, going to work, and opportunities to be together in the theater.

 

Referring to her childhood memories in Crimea, Maria Bakalo tells how in the 90s she went to work with her mother in a military unit in Simferopol. Maria's children are present in the performance, who also go to work with their mother. They play on the console, get bored, do puzzles, interfere with work. 

 

Maria Bakalo is a choreographer and professional dancer, so dance, plastic is an important part of the performance. On stage, Maria interacts with a white ball — fitball — in an image that embodies the core of danger. With him, Maria balances, takes a position of resistance, sometimes capitulates to the impossibility of finding stability.

 

The scenographic solution and costume, which resembles the image of either death or the savior of the Mother of God, were created by artist Jan Bachynsky, and the music for the performance was written by Mariana Klochko. 

Working on the performance, Maria Bakalo turns to various studies, in particular, she is inspired by the book by Mariana Budzheryn "The Bomb as an Inheritance. The Collapse of the USSR and the Nuclear Disarmament of Ukraine". Maria shares that in her work "she reflects on the theme of trust and betrayal, the value of a great deed in favor of a higher idea: peace? loyalty to the state / international alliances? defense of common values?" Despite the urgent need for armed defense of the country, the artist considers whether the rejection of nuclear weapons could potentially be a step in favor of the future. Was it a "choice in favor of life" in the case of Ukraine? Does he seem ridiculous, unsuccessful, short-sighted, frivolous to us now?
